Fire is BIG issue in California! Upstate CA - a Californian based GIS Company provide a web mapping solution to help fire departments understand and manage the risks involved with widlfires. GBS provided web development services to Upstate CA assist them in delivering a proof of concept solution.
Who are Upstate CA? Upstate CA is a boutique GIS and planning firm located in Downtown Chico, California. Upstate specialises in applying creative technical solutions to the fields of municipal government, real-estate and resource management. Their Requirement Wildfire is an ongoing concern for many communities in the Sierra Nevada foothills where urban development often interfaces with fire-prone landscapes. Communities often map the conditions of each parcel is respect to their wildland fire threat. Many of the parcel-level conditions can be modified to promote safer conditions. The prototype website can be used by local governments to manage each parcel's status. For example, some properties fall out of compliance with things ranging from vegetation conditions to roofing type. How GBS Helped Using the Mapserver open-source mapping framework, GBS assisted Upstate CA, (LLC in California) to develop a prototype website that can be used for managing fire hazards data such as structure ignitability, fuels exposure, and maintenance status. Using the website local governments can manage the data through the web without the licensing requirements and training required of GIS software. Also, several tools have been created that make it easier for agencies to print maps, send out mailings, and even issues citations. |
