Papakura District Council GIS Management
Papakura District Council is a progressive local authority who utilise their GIS for many projects as well as day-to-day operations.  Being in the Auckland region, located close to the New Zealand’s largest metropolitan local authorities (and Regional Council), creates special pressures and expectations.  GBS plays a significant role in the management, delivery and service provision of GIS to the Council and the wider community.

 

 

Who are the Papakura District Council? 

 

Papakura District Council (PDC) is a medium sized local authority relative to the rest of New Zealand.  However, they are the smallest of the local authorities in the Auckland Region, in terms of geographical area and population / rating base.  This creates a number of pressures on a smaller organisation where Council clients often work across borders.  Hence the GIS operation needs to be able to deal with the expectations of the public and the private sector.  To assist with this, PDC is an active participant in the Auckland Regional Geospatial group.  PDC is an ESRI site with ArcGIS Desktop and ArcIMS licenses. 

 

How GBS Helps

 

GBS provides their whole team experience to the PDC, which essentially means that we provide the core management of GIS at the Papakura District Council.  This includes:

 

      • Maintenance and the on-going development of the Council’s GIS Intranet facility in conjunction with Spatial Media.  Spatial Media provide the core development of Intramap but GBS manage the on-going development and implementation of functionality and templates, including of course the support and maintenance of ArcIMS.
      • Development of core data maintenance productivity tools.  This enables more efficient, productive and accurate data capture, metadata capture, search tools and analysis tools.  Some of these tools have been delivered across a number of GBS’ clients and the PDC is often used as a test site.  This benefits all our clients.
      • Support for the necessary tools and processes required for data integration – from the CRS (LINZ land base data) data supplies to As-Built data, to facilities and processes to export data to external clients.  In addition, we provide expertise in data management and structures.
      • Project Management is a core feature of the services provided by GBS – and PDC is no exception.
      • Strategic support and advice, liaising with the various departments of the PDC to ensure that GIS is able to fulfill any requirements demanded of GIS.  This includes developing processes and functions to integrate with other systems, or provide enhancements to existing systems where day-to-day operations have specific needs.  GBS also represents the Council at the Auckland Regional Geospatial Group.
      • Providing assistance with detailed and complex analyses for various departments such as policy planning, engineering departments, building and resource management.

 

 

All this enables GIS to meet the demands and more required of GIS for both their internal and external clients.

 

GBS has had a long and productive relationship with the Papakura District Council and continues to provide on-going support across a variety of departments within the organisation.
